What is Nordic Walking?

Originally developed in Finland, the activity was seen as a method for cross-country skiers to train during the off-season. They found that walking with the help of special poles to assist the body  was a perfect way to stay in shape and also contributes towards improved balance and posture.

Today, Nordic Walking attracts all-comers from the less physically fit to the fitness enthusiast. With the specially developed poles, Nordic Walking on average can burn more than 40% more calories than normal walking.

Using your arms and legs through a greater range of motion than normal means you are increasing calorie expenditure and can be described as a 'total body workout’ Using this form of exercise is 90% of the body's skeletal muscles are used, more than swimming, cycling and running. Bored with the gym? This might be the answer!

Our Suggested Nordic Walking Pathway.

  • A Nordic Walking Workshop is essential as an introduction to the correct Nordic Walking Technique. The workshop will teach the technique up to the health level.

Workshops can be carried out on an individual basis or in groups of up to 20. Private group workshops are available at special rates, depending on the size of the group. See booking fees for prices

  • You can follow the workshop by booking onto our six week (1 hour a week) fitness plan. The six sessions will not only teach you further technique, up to the fitness level, it will provide a good 'freshairobics' session.
  • We organise weekends away for those who may be interested in furthering their Nordic Walking and seeing some beautiful countryside. The weekends can be tailored to suit the group.
  • Finally we are able to organise some weeks away in the Southern French Alps at 5* catered chalets, and  or weeks away in the Northern Foothills of the Pyrenees in gorgeous accommodation and setting.

The choice would be all yours for a family or group booking.

Nordic Walking Workshop

Next workshops 22nd April & 23rd April 2008.

To get the best benefit from Nordic Walking it is recommended that you attend a 'Workshop' first.

Beginners will be taught the technique on a flat, firm surface and additional workshops will offer you the experience of Nordic Walking in woodland and over hilly ground. Individual sessions are completely flexible and the client can select their desired terrain.

Nordic Walking is suitable for all age groups and abilities. People who have physical limitations find Nordic Walking allows them to exercise at a higher intensity compared to other activities. It also used by athletes to provide an alternative way of exercising major muscle groups at a high intensity.

Nordic walking is a good fitness preparation  for cross country and alpine skiing.

It is possible to have different abilities within the same group as people can walk at the same speed and increase the intensity by working their arms harder.

Note: As with any exercise, it is advisable that you consult your doctor before taking part in a new exercise.

Our workshops are designed in a way to make learning the Nordic Walking technique easy. A workshop session will usually take around 1 hour and costs £5.00 per person. The workshop can accept up to a maximum of 10 persons so it is a good idea to book your session time ahead.
