South Pennines , Dales & Cumbria This 110 mile route between Holmfirth (last of the summer wine country) and Kendal (The gateway to the Lake District) takes in a variety of landscapes. From the Moorlands of the South Pennines to the beauty of the Dales and the peaceful Eden Valley. The route passes by Malham Tarn, the quaint cobbled streets of Dent and the waterfall and caves at Ingleton to name but a few outstanding points. The route generally follows the national cycle network routes. The route would be suitable for anyone with a good level of fitness. The terrain is demanding so the mileage is kept to a sensible distance each day. Day One 36 Miles We make a start from Holmefirth and soon we gain height crossing the eastern side of the Pennines on joyfully quiet minor roads. We make a lunch time stop at the scenic and interesting Hebden Bridge before continuing over Widdop Moor and onto to Colne for our first overnight stop Day Two -39 Miles A day of glorious cycling as we head towards the Yorkshire Dales National Park and onto the historic market town of Settle for our lunch stop. After Settle we cycle on quiet minor roads through the villages of Wharfe and Clapham before approaching the the village of Ingleton famous for its caves and waterfalls for our second overnight stop. Day Three- 35 miles A gated road allows carefree and very scenic cycling through Dentdale and the village of Dent and onto the Market Town of Sedbergh. We then hug the edge of the Howgill fells before turning West to our final destination Kendal Castle.
