What is Nordic Walking?
Originally developed in Finland, the activity was seen as a method for cross-country skiers to train during the off-season. They found that walking with the help of special poles to assist the body was a perfect way to stay in shape and also contributes towards improved balance and posture.
Today, Nordic Walking attracts all-comers from the less physically fit to the fitness enthusiast. With the specially developed poles, Nordic Walking on average can burn more than 40% more calories than normal walking.
Using your arms and legs through a greater range of motion than normal means you are increasing calorie expenditure and can be described as a 'total body workout’ Using this form of exercise is 90% of the body's skeletal muscles are used, more than swimming, cycling and running.
