Running is an activity exercise that has many flavours. Running can be as hard or easy as you want it to be.

Road Running, this tends to be a definition of any running were you leave your home and run on whatever access roads or paths there are. The advantages are that you can do your own thing depending on how you feel. You can run as a part of a group or club, the cost is small, if any cost. there is the disadvantages of traffic and your safety.

Trail Running, This is the style of running that is usually in the countryside or parks. The underfoot ground is softer on your joints and the whole run can be a lot less stressful than other running formats. Traffic disadvantages are reduced, though be aware not entirely.

Fell Running This is the running usually up and over hills, moors, mountains. It is a little more specialized and does require forward planning to minimize safety concerns. The correct clothing and equipment is required and it is probably better to run in a group or club till you are more experienced with this running format.

XC Cross Country Running This running lies somewhere in between the Trail and Athletic running for its competitiveness and can be as bad as you remember from school, or a fantastic yet challenging fun event. Special shoes and equipment is probably desirable for this type of running depending upon the course and weather conditions.

Athletics, track based running, is a fairly disciplined running. It has the advantages of being traffic free, and great if you want to achieve a good running fitness over accurately measured shorter distances. Usually there will be some organisation involvement, with coaches on hand to help you train correctly for your goals.
