The Penine Cycle Challenge stage 1

Friday 25th May - Sunday 27th May 2012 FULL

We have put together a cycle route using mainly the Sustrans Route 6 and the Pennine Cycleway.

Day One
A wonderful start through Clumber Park, Sherwood Forest and Sherwood Pines on nicely undulating cycle and forest trails. Minor roads lead us to Newstead Abbey and the wonderful grounds before heading on towards the Derbyshire Dales and our overnight stop at Belper.
Approx mileage 45 miles
Day Two.
The big day! Setting off on minor roads we get a spectacular view of Carsington Water. From Carsington we quickly pick up the High Peak trail allowing glorious off road cycling on good cycle trails cutting through the Derbyshire Dales. At Parslay Hay we meet the Tissington Trail which we follow all the way to the Spa town of Buxton. No time to take the waters before we continue our cycle north with views across Kinder Scout to the east. The Longdendale Trail hugs the reservoir and follows the route of the former Woodhead railway line. It has shallow gradients and a smooth surface making it ideal cycling terrain. We terminate at Dunford Bridge before a final climb to Holmefirth, our overnight stop at Compo’s home town (last of the summer wine)
Approx Mileage 60 miles
Day Three
Homeward bound. Cycling south from Holmefirth we pick up the Trans Pennine Cycle way. A variety of routes are available but we will use the Timberland Trail which goes via the village of Wortley. Then on through the historic Wentworth estate before cycling south towards Rotherham. Quiet roads take us to Ulley Country Park. We are now close to home ground as we cycle through Brampton en le Morthen taking the familiar roads back to Worksop.
Approx Mileage 50 miles
